Whats the difference between Digital Art and Illustration?

Maxor asked:

Ok, so say i had to categories different types of art would i have 2 different categories one for illustration and one for digital art, or just have one category for illustration… im not entirely sure what separates digital art and illustration…

My current thoughts are illustration contains drawn elements, and digital art contains effects and photos, but i hear a lot of people call those illustrations.

  1. to me digital art is created on a computer somehow

    eg.

illustration is drawn free hand on paper

certainly digital art can also include photo manipulation

  2. Some illustrations are done with traditional tools like pencils, pens, paint brushes and such.

Some illustrations are done entirely with digital tools (computers) or “digitized” at some point in the process.

So, to an illustrator, such as myself, the computer is merely another tool I use to create illustrations.

To use an analogy, take the term “automobile.” What’s the difference between an automobile and a car. Some automobiles are trucks and some automobiles are cars and some automobiles are vans, and so on.

So, to answer your question, all you have to understand is that some illustrations are digital art.
